I have been trying to connect separate strings of lights to the same area using diffrerent channels for each.  The problem is once there is a light attached it won't allow you to attach another in the same local area.  Is this even possible?

You should be able to select layering.  This will give you the option to lay another string of lights on top of an existing string.

Another option in addition to layering mode is to use the channel/controller isolation feature.  You can click on the channel or controller number box.  Doing this will hide the other lights temporarily allowing you to place lights where other lights exists.
